Northern Design Awards Shortlist for the Best Conversion

This beautiful Grade I Listed building was completed earlier this year for the Youth Hostel Association.

Lucy Jones treated this building with the utmost respect and made sure all of the internal alterations to the original building were designed sympathetically to preserve the character of the space, such as new doors having panelling and architraves to match the existing original doors.

On the first floor a new opening was created to provide independent access into an ensuite bedroom. A staircase was installed to bridge the difference in levels. Access had previously only been afforded through a dormitory. External repairs to the building were the responsibility of the National Trust however an opening was formed in the side of the chimney where an existing soot hatch was once located and has been since stoned up.
